On 2:31 AM by HOTEL INFORMATION in French colonial-style hotel, French investors, Hoan Kiem Lake, HOTEL METROPOLE HANOI, Luxurious, magnificent Opera House No comments
HOTEL METROPOLE HANOI |
The Hotel Metropole Hanoi is an award-winning French colonial-style hotel lying in the heart of Hanoi, near Hoan Kiem Lake and the magnificent Opera House.
Boasting a classical white façade, green shutters, original wrought iron detail, wood paneling and a lush courtyard lawn, the hotel is one of the region’s few remaining hotels of its era.
Built in 1901 by two private French investors, the hotel quickly became the rendezvous point for colonial society in the first half of the century. Following Vietnamese independence in the 1950s, the new national government opted to maintain it as the official hotel for visiting VIP’s. During and after the war years, it became a base for press and diplomats.
90 years after it had risen so gloriously from the swamps of ancient Hanoi, the Thong Nhat Hotel was closed for the facelift of the century. Under the first phase, the existing hotel was refurbished over an eighteen-month period and reopened in March 1992, again called Hotel Metropole. The second phase started in 1994 when work commenced on the 135-room Opera Wing, and the four-storey Metropole Center office tower above it, both of which opened in late 1996. After the reconstruction of the new Club Rooms, replaced Metropole offices, the third phase will be fully finished end 2008. The Club Metropole Lounge and Imperial Suite, opened in May 2008, introduce an impressive new oasis of charm and luxury at Metropole Hanoi.
The hotel guest list over the past years has included the Presidents of USA, of France, of Switzerland, the Prince of Monaco, of Denmark, of Sweden, the King of Malaysia, the Duke of Gloucester, the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, the Prime Ministers from Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, France, Canada, Nigeria, Norway and Vietnam, and important business delegations such as the World Presidents Organization, the Asia Leaders Forum, the 5th Asia-Europe Meeting, the APEC 2006 Leaders Week, as well as famous people like Catherine Deneuve, Charlie Chaplin, Jane Fonda, Stephen Hawking, Oliver Stone, Mick Jagger, Sir Roger Moore amongst others. It also includes a host of corporate heavyweights and to this day the hotel’s bars remain a haunt for international and local journalists wanting to pick up the latest business news.

La Terrasse
At La Terrasse, inspired by the famous Parisian cafés, visitors are plunged into the heart of Hanoi's bustling urban life. Observing passers-by, reading the papers, sipping a glass of Perrier, time slips by imperceptibly. Café furniture, antique ceiling fans and the street life, a whiff of France wafting right in the heart of Vietnam.
Le Club
The Gallic ambiance at the Club Bar varies according to the time of day. With live jazz in the evenings, guests sample exceptional grand crus or the ultimate classic cocktails.
And every day, between 3:00 and 6:00 pm, an irresistible chocolate buffet opens in the Club Bar. Praline, ganache, éclairs, mille-feuille pastries, chocolate fountain, a selection of every imaginable kind of French pâtisseries and delectable chocolate in every shapes and forms… Its reputation has spread well beyond the borders of Vietnam.
Bamboo Bar
The Bamboo Bar with its local-style roof and wooden floor is an ideal spot to relax beside the delightful swimming pool with a refreshing cocktail. The casual setting of this poolside venue invites guests to unwind with the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi signature Graham Greene Martini. Adjacent to le Club, Bamboo Bar serves light snacks, gourmet ice creams, desserts, fruit juices, coffees, teas and refreshing cocktails.
Restaurants
Three menus, three experiences, three essential Hanoi references… The three Metropole restaurants are all famous dining venues, each offering a different and exotic experience: the traditional Beaulieu, the best of France on the far side of the world, the authentic Spices Garden, the ultimate in Vietnamese gastronomy, and Angelina, the Italian wine bar, the capital’s latest hotspot.
Le Beaulieu
Renowned for its exquisite French cuisine - perfectly crafted in both flavour and presentation - multi-award winning Le Beaulieu has for over a century been the venue of dazzling soirées and sublime Sunday brunches. Wine connoisseurs will find pleasure in Le Beaulieu's impressive wine list featuring selections by our passionate Head Sommelier.
One hundred years old like the hotel, this mythical dining destination frequented by war correspondents (Graham Greene, Lucien Bodart...) and also politicians, entrepreneurs and diplomats is directed by head chef Nicholas Shadbolt. The decor is a unique Sofitel blend of Indochinese ambiance and French sophistication: marble and wooden parquet floors, large windows overlooking the street, soft breeze wafting from the ceiling fans, lit by chandeliers at nightfall… One of the finest wine cellars in Hanoi, housing over 100 grands crus, excellent champagne and vintage French and New World wines, a symbol of French heritage.
Spices Garden
Vietnamese culinary tradition redefined with French flair. Enjoy views of the lush gardens courtyard and swimming pool. Embark on an adventure of the palette with the exotic flavours of Hanoi's bustling cuisine, with "pho" noodle soup, tender spicy barbequed pork and the freshest of garden vegetables, spices and herbs.
Chef Van, who has been working in The Metropole kitchens for 17 years and familiar with all the secrets of traditional Vietnamese recipes, such as Pho, the very popular Vietnamese soup that one can buy from vendors on every street corner in Hanoi. Every lunch, there is a spectacular buffet: overflowing with a multitude of entrées and main courses. With cutting edge decor, candy colours and new veranda, dinner at the Spices Garden is a whole new experience, revealing the many different facets of Vietnamese cuisine and its finest specialties from both North and South. Spring rolls from the north, prawns with lemongrass from Hue region, Saigon chicken, plus an infinite variety of ways of preparing beef including a recipe formerly used for cooking tiger meat. Utterly unique, from its decor to the quality of the cuisine, this restaurant astonishes even Vietnamese guests.
Angelina
The concept of "wining and dining" comes to life at Hanoi's most chic Italian restaurant and lounge. With avant-garde design, a "who's who" guest list, live DJ music and a wine cellar filled with rare vintages and top-shelf labels, Angelina is the venue for sumptuous cuisine, champagne cocktails, and evening soirées to remembered.
Angelina at the Hotel Metropole Hanoi has recruited one of Macao's finest Italian chefs, Ivan Negro, to supply some panache to the city's Italian aspirations. More than just a restaurant, Angelina is Hanoi’s hip hotspot! Where all Hanoi meets up to sample wine, Italian spirits, new and original cocktails, martinis and rare cigars. Often a crowd of over 100 people gather outside on the pavement to wait for a table, an eclectic population, a cross-section of society including travellers of all nationalities, officials and local celebrities, Hanoi’s most fashionable hairdresser, the deputy director of the hotel… No two nights are ever the same at Angelina– it’s all about spontaneity. This Italian restaurant and wine bar is now the place to be in Hanoi for anyone who looking for an exceptional wining and dining experience with creative conceptual cuisine. Colourful and attractive, the food is a reflection of the setting.
